The Galloway Forest, in SW Scotland, is Britain's largest forest park and covers an area of 300 square miles. The diversity of scenery includes moorland, mountains, lochs & seashore. The Forestry Commission's Stroan Loch car park is the starting point for two waymarked forest trails. The area is a quiet and unspoilt part of Britain, but in the 15th and 16th centuries it was known as the Land of the Border Reivers and cattle rustling and thieving was the norm. There's a 10 mile Raiders' Road through the Galloway Forest that includes Stroan Loch. A £2 charge (2007) is levied. The road is closed from late autumn to early spring.
