Hollingworth Lake - Littleborough (near Rochdale) was known as the "Weighvers' Seaport" for most of its first 100 years, as it was as close to a seaside resort as many Rochdale cotton workers would ever get. The lake was built in 1800 to supply water for the Rochdale Canal Company, which it did for the first 50 years. By the mid 19th century century it was realised that the lake could be used for recreation. Steam boats were rented out on the lake, then rowing boats and sailing boats. The lake became known as the 'Henley of the North'. It's an easy 1.5 mile stroll around the lake. The area became a Country Park in 1974. Landranger Grid Reference SD939151
