Knaresborough is an attractive market town in North Yorkshire, set 120 feet above a gorge of the River Nidd. It has the remains of an early 14th century castle built by Edward II, and there are still the earlier remains of King John's moat. Knaresborough was also home to Mother Shipton, England's most famous Prophetess whose prophetic visions became known and feared throughout England during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The famous Petrifying Well is next to Mother Shipton's cave. People travelled great distances to bathe in its waters, as they were believed to have miraculous healing properties.
