Haweswater Reservoir is in the valley of Mardale, Cumbria. Haweswater was originally a natural lake, but the construction of the dam raised the water level by 95 feet. Work began in 1929 after Parliament passed an Act that gave Manchester Corporation permission to build a reservoir to supply water to north west England. The farming villages of Measand and Mardale Green were flooded, the church was dismantled, the bodies exhumed, and the church's stone was used in constructing the dam. Haweswater was the last remaining place in England where golden eagles nested, but since 2004 only a solitary male remains. Landranger Grid Reference NY479115
