The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is the largest aqueduct in Britain. It is fed by water from the Horseshoe Falls near Llangollen and enables the Llangollen canal to link Trevor and Froncysyllte by crossing the River Dee, 126 ft. below. Canal engineer William Jessop had proposed an aqueduct with 3 locks at each end, but as his talents were in great demand, a supervising engineer, Thomas Telford, was appointed to oversee the project. Telford was dissatisfied with the original design and his higher level scheme, with no locks, was approved. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct was opened on 26th November 1805 and has been nominated for World Heritage Site status. Landranger Grid Reference SJ273420
