Snowdrops are the forerunners of spring and one of our first flowers of the new year. There are 75 varieties. All are white and most have green tipped inner segments. Their botanical name is galanthus, which is Latin for 'milk white flowers'. They are totally hardy, and if the weather is cold the flowers last longer. Snowdrops look best when naturalised. They prefer light shade and are ideal for growing under deciduous shrubs, or in a woodland setting. Snowdrops dislike soggy soil and thrive best in humus-rich, moisture retentive soil. Snowdrops planted 'in the green' i.e. whilst in full growth, establish quickly. Landranger Grid Reference NN515066
