The Stoodley Pike monument stands on the moors above Todmorden in West Yorkshire. The site was probably originally used for bronze age burials as bones were found when excavating for the first circular tower. The first monument was built in 1815 to celebrate the peace at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Unfortunately it collapsed when the next war started, on the very day that the Russian ambassador left London before the Crimean War. The current structure (121 feet) was designed by local architect James Green and was completed in 1856. You can climb up the 39 steps of the inner spiral staircase to get great views.
