Using the 'stretch option' in Windows XP - Display Properties option
(This is Help Page 2 of two pages. More recommendations on Help Page 1)
If you use Mozilla Firefox as your browser the stretch option is available when you right click the image to 'Set As Desktop Background'. Although Windows uses the word 'stretch' this is rather ambiguous as 'stretch' also reduces the images to fit the desktop!
If Internet Explorer is your default browser then the stretch option may well not be available, but the good news is that my pictures should automatically resize to fit your desktop!
If not, this is how to use the stretch option in Windows XP and earlier versions. Click on a blank part of the desktop (i.e. not on an icon) and choose Properties from the pop-up menu. Click on the Desktop tab from the Display Properties menu. Your wallpaper background will be highlighted. Choose the word 'stretch' from the drop down menu to the right and click either Apply or OK.
This means that if your monitor's resolution does not exactly match my pictures sizes 1024x768, 1280x1024 or 1680x1050 you will almost certainly be able to use my desktop wallpaper on other monitor sizes with no distortion or loss in quality. It's OK to choose an image size that is larger than your monitor's resolution. Windows can shrink the image to fit your desktop if you tell it to stretch the image!
As at April 2008 the 3 sizes of wallpaper on this site should be more than adequate for 90% of the monitor resolutions in use. Check out the recommendations on this page.
